About MonaCoin

Origins and Concept

Monacoin, conceived in the December of 2013, is the first alternative cryptocurrency developed in Japan. It is based on the popular ASCII art character, Mona.

Monacoin is not a payment system controlled by one single entity, but a fully distributed payment system preserved by everyone who uses it via client applications running on their computers.

Community-Driven Growth

While much of the world treats most cryptocurrencies as speculative ventures, Monacoin is a cryptocurrency popularized by the initiative of its community: it continues to be nurtured and built upon not by a core development team but by its enthusiastic user base.

To give some examples, Monacoin users have brought up various kinds of Mona-based web applications and services, have erected shrines in appreciation of Monacoin, regularly play word games when tipping others (known as "monage" (モナゲ, lit. "throwing mona")), and otherwise use the coin in ways users of most other coins would never have thought of.

Frequently asked questions

What is MonaCoin and how is it different?

MonaCoin is a Japanese cryptocurrency focused on community and online culture. Unlike many coins, it uses Lyra2REv2 mining algorithm, making it ASIC-resistant for a time, though it eventually saw ASIC adoption.

How does MonaCoin's technology work?

MONA uses Proof-of-Work (PoW) like Bitcoin, but with a different mining algorithm (Lyra2REv2). Transactions are verified by miners, and the network aims for faster block times compared to Bitcoin.

How are new MonaCoins created?

New MONA are mined through PoW, with a total supply capped at 105,120,000 coins. The block reward decreases over time through halvings, similar to Bitcoin's emission schedule.

How to store and use MonaCoin?

MONA can be stored in official wallets or compatible third-party wallets. It's accepted by some Japanese merchants and often used for online tipping, especially in anime/manga communities.
