About Kasuma

Kusama is meant to be Polkadot’s canary network, warning us of issues to keep things safe for the developers downchain. Without a network like Kusama, there is no reasonable way to fully understand the potential dangers that lie ahead. We are building bleeding-edge, experimental technology, which means there are no promises about what Kusama will do or how it will work – expect a lot of chaos (and a little fun).Kusama is an early, highly experimental version of Polkadot presenting real economic conditions. The community will own the network – there will be no central kill switch. Kusama will exist as long as its community maintains it and we envision it will cater to new, early functionality and projects preparing to develop and deploy on Polkadot.

Kusama (KSM) is an experimental blockchain platform designed for developers to test and deploy new technologies before launching on Polkadot. Think of it as a 'canary network' where innovations are tried in real-world conditions. It uses the same codebase as Polkadot but with faster governance and lower barriers to entry.

Frequently asked questions

What is Kusama and how is it different from Polkadot?

Kusama is Polkadot's sibling network, focused on experimentation and rapid iteration. While Polkadot prioritizes stability, Kusama allows for faster upgrades and riskier innovations, making it a sandbox for developers.

How does Kusama's technology work?

Kusama uses a Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS) consensus mechanism, where validators secure the network and nominators back them with their KSM tokens. It also supports parachains (custom blockchains) connected to its Relay Chain.

How is KSM issued and distributed?

KSM tokens were initially distributed through a Polkadot token holder claim. New KSM is minted via staking rewards and parachain auctions, where projects lease slots by bonding KSM.

How can I store and use KSM?

KSM can be stored in wallets supporting Substrate-based networks (e.g., Polkadot.js). It’s used for governance, staking, bonding parachains, and paying transaction fees.
