What is Nym, and how is it different from a VPN or Tor?
Nym is a decentralized mixnet: your traffic is wrapped in multiple layers of encryption and shuffled together with other people's packets as it hops through a chain of mix nodes. Unlike a VPN, no single company can see both who you are and where you're connecting. And unlike Tor, Nym adds cover traffic and mixes packets at every hop, making traffic analysis far harder.
How does the Nym technology and its consensus work?
The mixnet uses the Sphinx packet format: each packet is encrypted in layers and stripped one layer per node, so no single node ever knows both the sender and the destination. The Nym blockchain is built on the Cosmos SDK and secured by validators through proof-of-stake. Mix nodes, in turn, earn rewards via 'proof of mixing' — automated checks that they are genuinely shuffling traffic the way they should.
How is NYM emission structured?
NYM has a hard cap of 1,000,000,000 coins — that is the maximum that will ever exist. Rewards for mix nodes and validators are paid out of this fixed allocation set at launch rather than through unlimited new issuance. In other words, the token cannot be diluted by runaway inflation.
