BlackRock's Spot Bitcoin ETF Overtakes Grayscale as Largest Fund

BlackRock IBIT Becomes Largest Spot Bitcoin ETF
BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has surpassed Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) to become the world's largest Bitcoin fund, marking a significant shift in the digital asset investment landscape.
BlackRock's fund now holds over $20 billion in assets under management (AUM), exceeding Grayscale's $19.65 billion AUM as of Tuesday, May 28. This milestone is a result of consistent inflows into BlackRock's ETF since its launch in January, while Grayscale has faced significant outflows over the past few months.
Grayscale Outflows Drive Shift in Bitcoin Funds
Since its conversion to an ETF in early 2024, Grayscale's Bitcoin fund has experienced nearly $18 billion in outflows, shrinking its position as the largest Bitcoin ETF. This is likely attributed to investors favoring BlackRock's Spot Bitcoin ETF due to its lower management fees. BlackRock's ETF boasts a 0.25% fee, compared to Grayscale's 1.5% annual fee.
While Grayscale has announced plans to reduce its fees, investors seem to favor BlackRock's more affordable option. BlackRock's ETF has also demonstrated a strong performance, recording its highest inflow of $849 million on March 12.
In the past week, BlackRock has continued to dominate the Spot Bitcoin ETF landscape, attracting significant inflows while Grayscale continues to experience outflows. This trend underscores investor confidence in BlackRock's ETF and highlights the potential impact of low fees and strong performance on investor preference.
This shift in the Bitcoin fund market signals a growing preference for lower-cost, regulated investment vehicles among investors seeking exposure to the cryptocurrency market. BlackRock's dominance in the space could further encourage more institutional investors to enter the Bitcoin market.
