US Marshals Service Partners with Coinbase for Digital Asset Management

US Marshals Service Partners with Coinbase Prime
The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) has awarded a $32.5 million contract to Coinbase Prime for the custody and management of large-cap digital assets. The partnership signifies the agency's growing trust in the security and viability of digital currencies, and marks a significant step towards the government's adoption of blockchain technology.
Coinbase Prime, the institutional arm of Coinbase, will provide advanced trading services and custody solutions for the USMS. This includes managing the substantial volume of digital assets seized under the US government's forfeiture programs. The USMS chose Coinbase after a comprehensive competitive evaluation, highlighting its ability to operate securely on a large scale.
The agency emphasizes the need for professional and legal management of cryptocurrency assets, in line with the strict policies of the Department of Justice and the USMS. The contract is expected to streamline the process of handling digital assets, improving their administration and liquidation. It also supports the USMS's growing ability to manage and dispose of various types of cryptocurrencies.
This partnership comes amidst a period of scrutiny for Coinbase, which is facing legal challenges from US regulators, including the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Despite these challenges, Coinbase Prime has demonstrated its strength in institutional trading, safeguarding approximately $330 billion in assets as of the first quarter of 2024. This new partnership with the USMS further reinforces Coinbase's position as a leader in the institutional cryptocurrency market and highlights the growing acceptance of digital assets as a substantial asset class.
