FTX Estate's Strategic Sale of Locked SOL Tokens Nets $1.9 Billion Amidst High Demand

FTX Estate's Strategic Sale of Locked SOL Tokens Nets $1.9 Billion Amidst High Demand

In a significant move to alleviate its debt, the FTX estate has successfully offloaded approximately $1.9 billion worth of Solana (SOL) tokens. This sale represents about two-thirds of a larger SOL holding, initially valued at $2.6 billion. According to Bloomberg sources, these 30 million SOL tokens were sold at a rate of $64 each, a price influenced by their locked status which restricts immediate sale.

The sale attracted considerable attention from potential buyers, leading to a temporary delay. Notably, Galaxy Trading, part of Galaxy Digital, emerged as a key player by establishing a $620 million fund specifically aimed at acquiring the FTX estate's SOL assets. This fund charges a modest management fee of 1%.

FTX Holdings and Solana Token Inventory

Before this transaction, the FTX estate was in possession of 41 million locked-up SOL tokens, with an estimated value of around $7.5 billion. The current trading price for Solana has seen fluctuations, with a recent report from The Block indicating a price of $174.2 after a near 7% drop within 24 hours.

Post-FTX collapse in November 2022, there has been a rush among investors to secure shares of the company's Solana holdings, which constituted the largest portion of its digital asset portfolio. Other significant assets included bitcoin, ether, and the Aptos blockchain's native token APT.

Buyer Activity and Solana Market Recovery

Among the buyers, Neptune Digital disclosed a purchase of 26,964 SOL at the same discounted rate of $64 per token, amounting to $1.73 million, with a portion unlocking in March 2025. Furthermore, Pantera announced the creation of a $250 million fund in March with the aim of acquiring discounted Solana tokens from the FTX estate.

Following FTX's downfall, Solana's price plummeted to around $10 but saw a remarkable recovery in early 2024. It achieved an all-time high market capitalization of $81 billion in mid-March, driven largely by the popularity of memecoins. CoinGecko Research even dubbed Solana as this year's most popular blockchain.

Currently, with a market capitalization of $76.9 billion, Solana stands as the fifth-largest cryptocurrency, showcasing the enduring appeal and resilience of this blockchain technology amidst the volatile crypto market landscape.
