Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin Unveils Roadmap for Enhanced Scalability and Efficiency
Ethereum's co-founder, has shed light on the network's upcoming roadmap, outlining significant advancements and future developments aimed at bolstering the blockchain's scalability and efficiency. This announcement comes on the heels of the recent Dencun upgrade, introduced on March 13th, which endeavors to reduce layer-2 transaction costs and enhance data availability.
The Dencun upgrade marked the introduction of proto-danksharding, also known as EIP-4844, enabling the inclusion of data "blobs" within blocks. This upgrade represents a substantial leap forward in network efficiency, building upon the prior successes of the Merge and Shanghai upgrades.
Upcoming Ethereum Upgrades: The Verge and Purge
Next in line are the Verge and Purge upgrades. The Verge upgrade will focus on integrating Verkle trees, which will facilitate stateless clients and reduce node operation costs. This change is anticipated to pave the way for a tenfold increase in the layer-1 gas limit, leading to lower transaction fees.
The Purge upgrade, on the other hand, aims to simplify the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) by removing certain features, such as the SELFDESTRUCT opcode and the 2,300 gas stipend. This simplification will streamline the EVM and enhance its overall efficiency.
In a recent post, Buterin revealed that the ban on the SELFDESTRUCT opcode is nearing completion. While the opcode remains operational for the time being, its most problematic aspect — the ability to edit an unlimited number of storage slots simultaneously — has been addressed by the Dencun upgrade. This adjustment represents a crucial step towards simplifying Ethereum's protocol and augmenting its security and performance.
"The SELFDESTRUCT ban is mostly finished, actually! The opcode still exists (for now), but its most harmful behavior (namely, editing an unlimited number of storage slots all at once) is removed since Dencun," Buterin remarked on X.

These impending upgrades underscore Ethereum's unwavering commitment to its evolution into a more scalable and efficient blockchain network.
