In Canada, the attackers broke into 2 banks at once, demanding from their victims $2 million in cryptocurrency

According to CBC, the criminals put before the organizations a serious ultimatum: a million dollars each in exchange for non-disclosure of personal data of customers. And they want to get a ransom in the crypto currency.

In total, BMO and Simplii "missed" information about almost 100 thousand of their customers.

Canadian Banks Face Cryptocurrency Extortion

In their appeal to the banks, hackers presented their personal data of customers, which clearly indicates the seriousness of their intentions. Moreover, they told how they managed to carry out such a large-scale operation.

However, the BMO has not yet confirmed the loss of data. According to the Bank's press service, hackers, according to the organization, are not in Canada itself, and both cyber attacks are in the same chain. Also, the Bank emphasizes that paying fraudsters is not in their rules, but to protect their customers is the task of the organization.

At the same time, CIBC Bank guaranteed compensation of all lost funds to Simplii Financial customers in case of loss of their funds as a result of fraud.

Currently, the event is already under investigation by the Royal Canadian mounted police.

Note that before the incident with the canadian banks, the story of the hacking of the mining pool of the blockchain platform HDAC of Hyundai received a wide response.
