Spot Bitcoin ETFs Hit Record $111 Billion Trading Volume in March, Tripling February's Figures

Spot Bitcoin ETFs Record $111 Billion in March
In an extraordinary surge of activity, the trading volume for spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) reached a staggering $111 million in March, marking a nearly threefold increase from the $42.2 billion recorded in February. This significant growth underscores the escalating interest in these innovative cryptocurrency-based financial products since their introduction on January 11.
Eric Balchunas, a Senior ETF Analyst at Bloomberg, highlighted the monumental leap in trading volume on the social platform X, stating, "Bitcoin ETFs traded $111 billion in March, which is just about triple what they did in February and January. I can't imagine April will be bigger but who knows." This comment reflects the unexpected and rapid rise in popularity of spot bitcoin ETFs among investors.
Performance of Grayscale, BlackRock, and Fidelity
The spotlight continues to shine on the three leading spot ETFs issued by industry giants Grayscale, BlackRock, and Fidelity. Despite this, Grayscale's GBTC fund experienced a notable downturn, with total outflows reaching $15 billion since its conversion into a spot bitcoin ETF two months ago. The fund's bitcoin holdings plummeted by 46%, dropping from approximately 619,000 BTC to 333,619 BTC ($22 billion), as reported by CoinGlass.
On the other hand, BlackRock and Fidelity's spot bitcoin ETFs have seen impressive growth in assets under management, with figures hitting around $18 billion and $10 billion respectively last month, according to CoinShares data. These ETFs have emerged as the frontrunners in attracting inflows, signaling their success in capturing investor interest.
Shifts in Market Inflows and Outflows
However, the recent trading session witnessed a shift back to net outflows for spot bitcoin ETFs after a week of consistent net inflows. Monday's trading concluded with net outflows totaling $85.7 million, largely due to Grayscale’s fund shedding $302.6 million, per CoinGlass data.
This record-setting month for spot bitcoin ETFs demonstrates the dynamic and evolving landscape of cryptocurrency investment, with these new financial instruments capturing the attention and capital of investors worldwide.
