The UNICEF International Charitable Organization has launched a cryptocurrency fund in favor of the United Nations Children's Fund – "for the benefit of children and youth around the world."
According to an official announcement published on October 8 on the foundation’s website, UNICEF was the first UN organization to introduce donations in cryptocurrencies, namely Bitcoins (BTC) and Ethers (ETH).
This is a new and exciting venture for UNICEF. If digital economies and currencies have the potential to shape the lives of coming generations, it is important that we explore the opportunities they offer. That’s why the creation of our Cryptocurrency Fund is a significant and welcome step forward in humanitarian and development work.
According to an announcement on the site, the Ethereum Foundation was the first donor to the new cryptocurrency fund, where the organization sent ethers in the amount equivalent to $ 18,000 by the time of the donation. These funds will be transferred to a project that is involved in connecting schools around the world to the Internet.
We aim to support the research and development of the Ethereum platform, and to grow the community of those that benefit from a technology that will better countless lives and industries in the years to come.
