Malaysia Cracks Down on Crypto Tax Evasion with 'Ops Token' Initiative

Malaysia Launches Ops Token Against Crypto Tax Evasion

The Malaysian Inland Revenue Board (IRB) has launched a special operation, "Ops Token," targeting cryptocurrency businesses suspected of underreporting their transactions. The operation, conducted with the assistance of the Royal Malaysia Police and CyberSecurity Malaysia, involved raids at ten locations in the Klang Valley.

The IRB stated that data collected during these raids revealed significant non-compliance, with many entities failing to adequately declare their cryptocurrency transactions. The agency plans to analyze this data to identify the value of cryptocurrency assets traded and profits generated, determining the extent of tax leakage.

The IRB has warned all individuals and firms engaged in digital currency trading to comply with Malaysia's tax regulations or face enforcement actions. IRB chief executive officer Datuk Dr Abu Tariq Jamaluddin believes this operation will enhance Malaysia's "tax efficiency" and boost revenue by plugging tax loopholes.

Global Crypto Regulation and Tax Compliance Efforts

Malaysia is not alone in tightening its grip on crypto tax evasion. Australia's Taxation Office (ATO) is monitoring 1.2 million crypto-related accounts for potential tax discrepancies. Conversely, Turkey has chosen a different approach, announcing no plans to tax profits from stocks and cryptocurrencies. However, the government is considering a minimal transaction tax on these assets.

This diverse approach to cryptocurrency taxation highlights the global debate surrounding its regulation. While some countries are focusing on clamping down on tax evasion, others are exploring alternative strategies, reflecting the evolving nature of the crypto market.
