KBW Predicts Robinhood's Likely Victory in Potential SEC Lawsuit Over Crypto Operations

In a surprising turn of events, Robinhood, known for its cautious approach to cryptocurrency listings, received a Wells Notice from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), raising eyebrows among industry observers. KBW analysts, however, foresee a favorable outcome for Robinhood if the case goes to court.
On Monday, a report by Keefe, Bruyette & Woods (KBW) highlighted the unexpected move by the SEC against Robinhood (HOOD), a platform that has maintained a conservative stance by offering only fifteen cryptocurrencies, compared to its competitors who list over two hundred.
The notice suggests potential regulatory action, yet KBW analysts, led by Kyle Voigt, anticipate no immediate changes to Robinhood's U.S. crypto operations or its asset listings. They predict that the SEC might file a lawsuit in the coming months but argue that Robinhood's strict listing standards increase its chances of winning if the dispute escalates to court.
Crypto trading accounts for 12% of Robinhood's revenue, with ether (ETH) trading being a significant component. The brokerage firm maintains a market perform rating on Robinhood's stock with a $20 price target. As the situation unfolds, shareholders are advised not to expect a clear resolution before late 2025, drawing parallels with the SEC's ongoing case against Coinbase (COIN).
