South Korea's New Investor Protection Regulations Shake Up Crypto Market

South Korea's cryptocurrency market is about to undergo a major transformation as new investor protection laws come into effect on July 19, 2024. These regulations, outlined in the Virtual Asset User Protection Act, aim to safeguard investors and regulate the virtual asset market.
The law introduces measures to prevent unfair trading practices and ensure user protection, marking the first comprehensive regulatory framework for the South Korean crypto industry.
South Korea Implements New Crypto Regulations
Major exchanges, including Upbit, the leading platform in South Korea, are preparing to comply with the new rules. The Digital Asset Exchange Alliance, representing these platforms, has announced a six-month review of 1,333 altcoins to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
While the reassessment aims to prevent mass delistings, the impact of the new regulations is already being felt in the crypto market. Crypto prices have dipped as investors assess potential changes. Notably, LayerZero and Taiko have shown resilience, recording significant gains over the past week.
Market Impact and Exchange Adaptation
LayerZero has seen a 7-day change of +34.9% and a 24-hour change of +9.2%, while Taiko has registered a 14-day change of +23.9%, a 7-day change of 26.7% and a 24-hour change of +5.4%.
The new regulations will significantly impact Upbit, one of the top global exchanges, with a 24-hour trading volume of $783 million and 204 listed coins.
The coming months will be crucial in shaping the future of cryptocurrency trading in South Korea. As the market adapts to these new regulations, crypto investors should remain informed about potential changes in token availability and market dynamics.
